At an organisation in the an interim and selection sector, every half year, strategic info meetings are organized for all the employees of the company, at all levels. In these ‘Get Together’ meetings, the Managing Director shares the vision of the company with his employees and gives them the opportunity to ask questions and give suggestions. After each info meeting, a dinner is held where ideas can by exchanged between colleagues and management in a pleasant, informal way.
At a company in the IT sector, the manager walks around the work floor on a regular base. By this ‘Boss on the Floor’-principle, the manager comes into contact with his employees, experiences their way of work, understands their daily problems and frustrations, listens to them and tries to find solutions for their problems. Moreover, to guarantee an open, informal conversation with all the employees employees, several breakfast meetings are organised with groups of maximum 8 employees per session.
Respect
A lot of employers take a special interest in the appreciation and recognition of their employees for rendered services. Frequently this is given in the form of a bonus or share of profit. But also loyalty is often rewarded, for example with a nice present or an extra day off. In this way, a retail company gave all their employees an extra vacation day on the day of the employee’s birthday, as a manner of thanking all their employees for their loyal years of service in the company
At a company in the pharmaceutical sector, management cares for its employees. When talking with their staff, they noticed the employees’ need for a certain way of managing stress. Therefore, the organisation proposed several introductory sessions on how to reduce stress. Examples are: training in relaxing exercises, the basis of meditation, an introduction to Taij, etc. By offering these courses, the organisation aims to make life easier for the employees in their personal and professional work life.
Justice
At a telecommunication company, diversity is one of the key elements of their company strategy. Therefore they developed the ‘Inclusion & Diversity’ programme that concerns topics about age, sex, religion, nationality, disabled, etc. One of the projects is a mentor programme aimed at good performing female managers. Also, the company has established a network to recruit more extern female talent. For that reason they organize their ‘Shadowing Days’, where young females are invited to follow a day in the work life of a successful IT/Telecom career woman.
A temporary employment agency started up a study group for its employees over 45. The aim of this study group was to learn about and to understand the needs of this particular age group. This because the company considers these employees as extra valuable colleagues, seen their experience and maturity. These group sessions raised, among other things, the need for information about the legislation concerning end of career and its financial implications.
Fierté
A company specialized in IT links it mission and product to their commitment to society. This way, the Hands On Foundation of the company organizes a lot of projects supporting community. For example, they started up the Ultimate School Make Over project whereby employees taught at schools about safely surfing on the Internet.
A temporary employment agency has a unique way of linking the company’s mission to the support and commitment to society. Each year the company sends a number of employees to developing countries in order to work on sustainable projects. With this initiative, they try to bring into practice their knowledge and expertise for the benefit of a social responsible project. Last year, two employees went to Namibia to support an HR project and the fight against AIDS and HIV.
Ambiance
At an organisation the pharmaceutical sector, a very unique thanking culture differentiates the company. For example, it has become a routine to nominate your colleagues for any special recognition on the company’s website link ‘BRAVO’. Also, a tradition of thanking notes between employees exists on the work floor. Because of this spontaneous practice of showing appreciation, work at Amgen gets a special meaning!
At a firm specialised in vascular products, a group of employees, called “the Event Committee”, work with HR to organize several events throughout the year. These happenings allow employees (and for several events also their families) to be together and have fun, such as their ‘Open house day’, ‘FIT day’, their barbeque, party, ‘Sinterklaas Event’, ‘Christmas Lunch’ and happy hours.
